Information
¡¡¡¡After
a course of more than 50 years, CUG has grown from just a geological
college into one of the national key universities with multi disciplines.
The current students total over 13000, and the full-time faculty about
900. The university is also among those being authorized to carry out
the ¡°211 Project¡± construction during the ¡°Tenth Five-year Plan¡±.It
is regarded as an important base for the higher education of geology
and scientific research.
¡¡¡¡During the development of over half a century, the university has
gone through three stages. From its early foundation to the early 60¡¯s
of last century, Beijing College of Geology was founded in order to
train some professionals who were urgently needed at that time in the
field of geological exploration. As a result, the majors run by the
college at that time were all of geological engineering branches. Then,
until the middle of the 1980¡¯s, in order to facilitate the construction
of basic geological disciplines, and to meet the social demands for
socialist development, some majors of geosciences were set, thus forming
a pattern of major setting with equal emphasis on sciences and engineering.
Now until today, the early 21 century, with the confirmation of the
name ¡°China University of Geosciences¡±, the setting of majors in the
university has made a great breakthrough. Currently, CUG runs over 40
undergraduate programs in six disciplines: sciences, engineering, liberal
arts, management, economics and law. CUG has thus grown into an institution
of higher learning with obvious advantages in geosciences and coordinate
development in sciences, engineering, liberal arts, management, economics
and laws. It has also raised the goal of ¡°constructing a high-level
university with striking features, comprehensive advantages and coordinating
development¡±.
¡¡¡¡CUG always attaches great importance to the undergraduate teaching.
In order to improve the quality of teaching, leaders of several terms
has guided teachers and students in a hard and highly effective exploration.
The objective of undergraduate cultivation has been confirmed as ¡°training
talents with high qualification and outstanding creativity¡±. In order
to reach the goal, the university well grasped two opportunities in
the construction of undergraduate programs, enabling it to closely follow
the paces of the development of higher education. In 1987, after the
university was renamed as ¡°China University of Geosciences¡±, some non-geological
majors such as those of social sciences, economic management, computer
science and foreign languages were set. Former monotonous pattern with
dominance in geosciences has already undergone transformation and there
flourishes in CUG a multi-cross-discipline system. With the emergence
and rapid development of information, environmental studies, economics
and applied technology, in 1998, the university further coordinated
the relationships among various disciplines, enhanced their advantages,
developed newly set ones, and emphasized cross and comprehensive disciplinary
construction. Up to now, 48 undergraduate programs of six disciplines
have been set and authorized by the State Ministry of Education; CUG
has also been granted the right to independently examine and approve
undergraduate majors. In recent years, the number of current students
has been increasing by 15 percent. For example, the number of undergraduate
students doubled during the ¡°Ninth Five-Year Plan¡±; in 2001, current
undergraduates amount to over 10,000, which has never occurred since
the establishment of the university.
¡¡¡¡To help the students to adapt to the fierce competition and excessive
pressure of employment, CUG has established a psychological testing
and education to all the students. It also promotes the innovation of
regulations and encourages excellent students with potentials to show
themselves and stand out. In order to boost the simultaneous progress
in both teaching and learning, CUG has tried out a ¡°course-selecting
system¡±, and carried out ¡°double-language teaching¡±. Lots of other measures
are also taken in recent years including ¡°flexible credits¡±, ¡°prizes
for excellent scores in certain subjects¡±, ¡°funds for top students¡±,
¡°extra credits for top students¡±, ¡°upgrading form three-year program
to four-year program¡±, ¡°taking courses other than courses in their specialty
to gain double degrees¡±, ¡°joint running of universities in cooperation
with seven universities¡±, ¡°allowing students re-choose their majors¡±,
¡°recommending some students with special talents and some accomplishments
in certain areas or subjects to pursue master degrees without national
entrance examination¡±, and so on, which all allow students more room
for choeces in management in students¡¯ status, school records and ways
of taking courses.Base classes of sciences and engineering are the front
stages of the probing into the cultivation of creative talents. The
regarding achievements and experience have also been used for reference
by many other universities in our country.
¡¡¡¡Presently, with the efforts of all faculty members, the undergraduate
teaching of CUG has taken on a vigorous look. CUG always regards talent
cultivation as its central task and keeps the undergraduate education
as the basis. It is making a full display of the fine traditions, high
spirits, and running pattern of the university, deepening the reforms
in teaching, strengthening its infrastructure, enhancing the progress
in teaching quality, and striving for building itself into a high-level
university in the cultivation of highly-qualified and creative talents.
