¡¡¡¡China
University of Geosciences, located on the shore of the beautiful East
Lake in Wuhan city, is a university directly under the Ministry of Education.
It is one of the 33 universities being authorized by the state to establish
graduate school, and has been approved to enter the ¡°211 Project¡± as
well. Today, China University of Geosciences has grown into a multi-discipline
institution of higher learning with dominance in sciences and engineering,
and coordinate development in sciences, engineering, liberal arts, management,
economics and laws.
¡¡¡¡ Since the resumption of recruiting postgraduates in 1978, CUG has
enrolled altogether 693 doctors and 2836 masters. Of them, 302 have
been granted Doctor¡¯s Degree, and 1734 Master¡¯s Degree. There are about
3000 postgraduates of all types pursuing studies in the university,
including 363 doctors, 1008 masters and 574 masters of engineering studying
full time, and over 1000 students attending in advanced studies.
¡¡¡¡In order to adapt to the requirements of sustainable development,
with the efforts of over 50 years, the university has grown into a national
key university with dominating advantages in Earth Sciences and comprehensive
development of multi disciplines. The traditional geology has already
been broadened into cross-disciplinary geosciences of geology, natural
resources, and environmental and geological engineering. Now there are
8 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences in geosciences (including
Beijing campus), 3 ¡°Yangtze River Scholar¡± title-winners, 5 state key
disciplines of institutions of higher learning, 11 key disciplines at
provincial and ministerial level, 2 authorized top disciplines, 8 key
laboratories or engineering centers at provincial or ministerial level,
2 post-doctoral working stations, and 8 fields to recruit masters of
engineering. CUG also prides itself on being a host to the National
Teaching Supervising Committee of the teaching and learning of geosciences
in the Ministry of Education.
¡¡¡¡Graduate School of CUG always adheres to the instructions of keeping
pace with the times and regarding development as the fundamental principle.
It has the courage to carry out reforms and innovations and to adopt
strict administration, thus making great achievements. By now, the school
has already cultivated a large number of excellent talents, such as
Secretary of the Central Communist Youth League Sun Jinlong, ¡°Yangtze
River Scholar¡± title-winners Gao Shan and Hao Fang, winners of ¡°100
Nationally Excellent Doctoral Dissertations¡± Li Xinzhong and Zhang Kexin,
and many others working as backbones in all walks of lives. Most of
those excellent graduates have already become senior leaders, chief
engineers, professors and even doctoral supervisors. They are exerting
themselves to dedicate to the development of national economy. In 1999,
due to its prominent achievements, the Graduate School was honored as
an advanced collectivity in the administration of graduates¡¯ affairs.
Now, under the support of ¡°211 Project¡±, and facing the demands for
high-level talents, the school is trying to catch hold of the opportunities,
carry forward our cause into the future, and create a new situation
in improving postgraduate education.
