　　In recent years, China University of Geosciences promotes forcefully Deng Xiaoping Theory and the important thought of "Three Represents" by teaching them in the classroom, including them in the textbook and indoctrinating the students with them. The university makes full use of the classroom of Marxism theory, moral education and the Party School, organizations of CPP and CCYL and students' organizations to help students to cultivate the correct outlook on the world and values as well.

　　To help the students to adapt to the fierce competition and excessive pressure of employment, CUG has established a psychological consulting center and a psychological health education website so as to carry out the universal psychological testing and education to all the students and they are very popular with both faculty and students.

　　CUG always advocates teaching of well-known teachers and strives to develop competitive specialities. It also promotes the innovation of regulations and encourages excellent students with potentials to show themselves and stand out. Lots of measures are taken in recent years including "flexible credits", "prizes for excellent scores in certain subjects", "funds for top students", "extra credits for top students", "upgrading from three-year program to four-year program", "taking courses other than courses in their specialty to gain double degrees", "joint running of universities in cooperation with seven universities", "allowing students re-choose their majors", "recommending some students with special talents and some accomplishments in certain areas or subjects to pursue master　degrees without national entrance examination" and so on, which all allow students more room for choices in management in students' status, school records and ways of taking courses.

　　CUG always attaches great importance to the cultivation of students' ability of workshop practices. By the end of 2000, the fixed assets of CUG totals more than RMB Yuan 120,000,000. Apparatus and equipment with a value higher than RMB Yuan 50,000 increase to 121 sets. There are 2,891 computers for teaching, that is, every four teachers and students own one computer. Experiments available for basic courses and courses of speciality reach a percentage of 99% and 96.7%. The average outlay per student is among the highest in the institutions of higher learning of Hubei Province. All these guarantee a better chance for improving students' practical abilities.

　　Another striking feature of talent cultivation pattern of CUG is seeking any potential partners fit for cooperation in speciality programs off the campus and setting up bases for production, teaching and research. There are 7 off-campus fieldwork bases and 14 off-campus bases combining practice and research with teaching. Zhoukoudian Fieldwork Base in Beijing of CUG gains the reputation of so-called "cradle of geologist"; Hong'an County, a famous liberated area in Chinese revolution, becomes a multi-functional base for both geological fieldwork and moral education as well. For　a succession of 14 years, CUG has been awarded the title of "National Advanced Institution in Social Practices" by Ministry of Propaganda, Ministry of Education， Central Committee of Youth League and National Students' Union.

　　In May, 2000, CUG students on Scientific Expedition Team explored the origin area of Yangtze River. The mountaineering team climbed to the peak of a mountain of 6,621 meters above the sea level. This activity is very influential in society.

　　There are a total of more than 30 kinds of prize and scholarship in CUG for those students who are both intellectually and morally outstanding. In recent years, the university offers RMB Yuan 100,000 to finance all kinds of research or competition of science and technology among students. In the seventh "National Challenge Cup" competition, CUG won 1 first prize, 3 second prizes and 3 third prizes with its team total scores ranked top 30 in 300 institutions of higher learning.

　　CUG is very much concerned with those poor students and has already set up and perfected a complete system of financial aids to these students by "prize, loan, subsidy, aid, exemption from tuition or reduction of tuition and offering odd jobs". In 2001, the university offers a loan totaling RMB Yuan2,560,000 and 900 odd jobs both on and off the campus.

　　CUG is highly concerned with cultivation of cultural quality of students. Well-known scholars are often invited to give lectures. In addition, there are a fairly complete array of minor courses offered in culture and arts. Students are encouraged to take part in all kinds of activities in society. CUG Student Band enjoys a high reputation in the institutions of higher learning in Wuhan.

　　CUG also pays great attention to physical education and it enjoys advantages in sports like mountaineering, rock-climbing, surviving in the field, shuttlecock, kickboxing, badminton, etc. CUG won "President Cup" in succession of the fourth, fifth and sixth National College Students Sports Meeting. Sports players of CUG have also won medals of international competitions on behalf of China.

　　In 2001, one-off employment rate of CUG graduates was 95.15%, ranked in top three among institutions of higher learning of Hubei Province and among the best nationwide. In 2000, CUG was awarded the "Advanced Institution for Supervising the Employment of Graduates of Hubei Institutions of Higher Learning.
