Faculty of Earth Sciences
¡¡¡¡Faculty
of Earth Sciences, originating from the Mineral Geology & Prospecting
and Exploration Department of the former Beijing Geological College,
was adjusted in 1995 by the merger of the Geology Department, the Geochemistry
Department and the Geological Mechanics Department. Since the establishment
of the university, many famous and influential experts and scholars
including Professor Li Siguang, Yuan Fuli, Zhang Xizhi, Wang Bingzhang,
and Academician Feng Jinglan, Yin Zanxun, Wang Jiayin, Zhang Bingxi,
Wang Hongzhen, Yang Zunyi, Yuan Jianqi, Chi Jishang, Hao Yichun, Ma
XingYuan, Liu Baojun, Ding Guoyu, Yang Qi, Zhao Pengda, Yin Hongfu and
Yu Chongwen, etc have ever assumed teaching here. They have dedicated
a great deal to the discipline construction, scientific research and
talent cultivation. Over the 45 years since its establishment, the faculty
has cultivated about ten thousand undergraduates and one thousand postgraduates.
Some of them have become leaders in Party and state governmental organs,
such as Premier Wen Jiabao and Vice Minister of Ministry of Territorial
Resources Shou Jiahua (female); some have grown into outstanding scientists,
like Academician Liu Baojun, Ma Zongjin, Sun Dazhong, Ouyang Ziyuan,
Fu Jiamo, Zhang Miman, Ye Danian, Wang Jiyang, Qin Yunshan, Li Tingdong,
Yin Hongfu, Tang Zhongli, Jin Xianglong, and Rong Jiayu, and Professor
Gaoshan (winner of national fund for Elitist Youths). The current dean
is Professor Du Yuansheng, and secretary of the Party Branch Committee
Professor Hu Yikeng.
¡¡¡¡Faculty of Earth Sciences is the base both for basic scientific researches
on the national sciences (geology), and for the cultivation of teaching
talents. It is the locus of key disciplines of the engineering construction
initiated by the State Education Committee in ¡°211 Project¡±. It now
runs 3 state key disciplines (Paleontology and Stratigraphy, Mineralogy,
Petrology, Economic Geology, and Geochemistry), and 3 key disciplines
at provincial or ministerial levels (Structural Geology, Quaternary
Geology, and Map Cartography and Geographic Information Engineering).
There are also 3 posts for the first group of specially-appointed professors
of Yangtze River Talent Fund. All the disciplines mentioned have the
authorization to grant Doctor¡¯s and Master¡¯s Degrees; and a top geological
discipline of doctor¡¯s program and one geological post-doctoral working
station have also been set here. Furthermore, the faculty also runs
Laboratory of Component Exchange and Dynamics of Crust Mantle Systems
of the Ministry of State Land and Resources, and Open Laboratory of
the Earth Surface System of Hubei Province. Faculty of Earth Sciences
owns an especially experienced staff and advanced experimental facilities.
There are presently 3 Academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Yin
Hongfu, Yu Chongwen, and Zhang Benren), 34 doctoral supervisors, and
85 full and associate professors. Such key laboratories of ¡°211 Project¡±
as laboratories of ICP-MS, GC-MS, 3S Integrate Technology, Calculative
Geology-Geochemistry, Experimental Rock and Rheology, Ancient Geomagnetism,
Molectroics Paleontology, Fission Track, Structural Simulation, etc
are established in the faculty. Moreover, the faculty also holds some
modern teaching laboratories like that of microcomputer, English phonetics
teaching, microscope and micro paleontology, and teaching and practice
bases such as Zhou KouDian of Beijing, Bei Daihe of Hebei, Huang Shi
of Hubei, Three Gorges of Yangtze River and Lu Shan of Jiangxi as well.
All this has provided favorable conditions for the talent construction
and scientific research of the university. Students fostered by the
faculty all have solid basic knowledge of geosciences and practical
working skills. In addition to supplying highly-qualified professionals
for the research and development of geosciences, the faculty will expand
to some other geological and outstretched fields like resources, environment,
disaster, gemology, geological engineering, remote technology of GIS,
and land resources programming.
¡¡¡¡The geological disciplines of the faculty are the dominant disciplines
of CUG and bear definite influence both in and out of China. Prominent
features are showed especially in the research of three fields, namely
Geophysical Science, Earth Surface Science and Geodynamics. During the
past years, a large number of outstanding scientific achievements have
been made in many geoscientific fields. The scientific outlays expended
are continuously increasing to about ten million yuan annually. Each
year, there are over 80 academic papers being published in national
and overseas academic journals, including about 30 entering SCI,EI and
ISTP.
¡¡¡¡In 2001, the scientific research group pioneered by Prof. Yin Hongfu
found the Meishan Section at Changxing, Zhejiang Province, which was
recognized as GSSP of the Permian-Triassic Boundary (commonly named
as golden nail) by International Union of Geological Sciences, and thus
won great honor for China. This Scientific achievement was awarded top
ten major advances in fundamental research in China in 2001 and top
ten scientific and technological advances of ministry of Education and
won the first prize of Natural Science of Hubei Province. Another professor
of the faculty Jin Zhenmin assumed vice general director of the construction
of ¡°Modern Laboratory of Physical Characters of Rocks¡±, which was regarded
as one of the top ten publicly concerned scientific events by the State
Ministry of Science and Technology, Science and Technology Daily, and
CCTV.
