Research and Development

　　In addition to the cultivation of talent, China University of Geosciences actively provides the society with a variety of services such as scientific research, personnel training, engineering project construction, products development and management consultancy.

　　During the period of the “Eighth Five-Year Plan” and "Ninth Five-Year Plan" of Chinese Government, CUG secured a total of about RMB Yuan 150,000,000 in terms of contract for scientific research. As to CUG in Wuhan, it has undertaken an amount of 1695 scientific projects of all kinds, with more than 300 already being completed and approved. There were over 312 projects winning the Achievement Prize of Science and Technology at provincial, ministerial and national levels. Published papers add up to 10,000; published academic monographs amount to more than 500 and 80 inventions have been patented. At 2001 Scientific and Technological Prize Meeting of Hubei Province, CUG won 14 prizes all together, including 4 first prizes, 4 second prizes and 3 third prizes.

　　In 2001, CUG successfully passed the reviewing of first stage construction of "211 Project", which focused on the construction of five key disciplines of CUG, promoted the development of cross-disciplines, enhanced the educational level and academic level of the faculty, bettered the public service system, generated a batch of landmark achievements represented by "Golden Spike" Project, and greatly strengthened the comprehensive strength and its social influence.

　　The scientific research group pioneered by Prof. Yin Hongfu and Yang Zunyi, two academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, found the Meishan Section at Changxing, Zhejiang Province, which was recognized as GSSP of the Permian-Triassic Boundary on March 5, 2001 (commonly named as golden nail) by International Union of Geological Sciences and won great honor for China. This scientific achievement was awarded top ten major advances in fundamental research in China in 2001 and top ten scientific and technological advances of Ministry of Education and won the first prize of Natural Science of Hubei Province.

　　CUG established High-tech Industry Group, and set up Ezhou High-tech Garden, offering products and services in software development, drilling bits, nano-sized materials and geological environmental engineering, of which MAPGIS is the representative competitive product. CUG delegation took part in the Third International High-tech Achievements Trade Fair and signed contracts or agreements with more than 30 investors and businesses.

　　MAPGIS has been rated as the best domestic GIS product for five times in succession since 1997 in the "Domestic GIS Basic Software Testing" organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology and has a third of the market share at the home market with other two GIS software producers.

　　In recent years, CUG gears its research and development to the economic construction of China, trying to offer services to the development of Western China. Lateral cooperation accounts for half of the outlay of research and development, working on more than 100 projects in provinces and autonomous regions such as Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Inner Mongolia, Qinghai, Tibet, Xinjiang. Engineering Master education also focuses on the West of China.
