     Discipline Construction

More than 50 years of hard work has turned China University of Geosciences from just a geological college into a national key university offering multi-disciplines as well as the featured geosciences.

Siencetific Drilling and Engineering Project of the Chinese Landmass was initiated in East Sea in Jiangsu Province in 2001.CUG was the only university involved in the on-site scientific reaserch.

For the sake of sustainable development, traditional geology has been broadened into cross-disciplinary geosciences of geology, natural resources, and environmental and geological engineering. Now there are 8 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences in geosciences (including Beijing campus), 5"Yangtze River Scholar" title-winners, 5 national key disciplines of institutions of higher learning, 8 key labs or engineering centers at provincial or ministerial level, and 3 post-doctoral working centers. CUG also prides itself on being a host to the National Teaching Supervising Committee of Geosciences of Teaching and Learning of Ministry of Education.

In recent years, CUG has actively engaged in a new round of geological surveying of state land and resources. It once set the new technological criteria for the mapping of 1:250,000 scale. It also shoulders the responsibility of training advanced personnel for Chinese Geological Survey, as well as playing an important role in major geological surveying activities throughout China.

There are national and professional training bases for geological research and teaching, as well as a national professional base for geological engineering research and teaching. 80% of the graduates of the base classes pursue a further study of their master degrees. The theory and practice of the two bases are becoming increasingly influential in society.

Earth Sciences, the Journal of CUG, won the title of "Double-High" --- High Prestige & High Academic Level--- of the Chinese Periodical Competition, pioneering all the journals of institutions of higher learning.

CUG tries to maintain its advantages in geosciences. Meanwhile, it also strives to develop disciplines and specialties of national economics and social development. It now runs programs in 7 disciplines: science, engineering, economics, management, law, literature, and education. It includes altogether 23 schools and departments, offering a total of 50 undergraduate programs, 59 programs for masters, 25 doctoral programs and 3 Post-doctoral Working Stations. The total number of students of non-geological majors accounts for 80% of the curriculum and non-geological master programs makes up about 50%.

Forums of Resources and Environmental Economics hosted by CUG attract lots of specialist and scholars from over the country

Today, CUG not only has a batch of world-famous geologists but also an array of newly fledged middle-aged and young scholars making a name in non-geological areas. Students of CUG not only do research on the ancient fossils but also develop modern software. Former monotonous pattern with dominance in geosciences has already undergone transformation and there flourishes in CUG a multi-cross-discipline system. CUG has grown into an institution of higher learning with obvious advantages in geosciences and coordinate development in sciences, engineering, liberal arts, management, economics and laws.
