Physical Education
Department always sticks to the mass participation, regularity and effectivity of atheletics, actively carrying out mass activities. Excellent athletes like Wang Fuzhou, Li Zhengxin, Wang Yongfeng and Ci Luo, and excellent college students like Liu Yixin and Zhou Tianmiao have been selected. Moreover, the department also fostered our country with 5 international and 15 national master sportsmen. As to sports items, it is featured with such specialized ones as mountaineering, rock-climbing, medium and long-distance running, and swimming, thus developing extracurricular atheletic teaching with “College Student Surviving-in-the-field Experience and Research” as the major content. All this has been acknowledged by the regarding leaders and experts, and is titled “CUG Pattern”. The athletic work of the department has been successively hornored twice as national “Advanced Unit”, twice as national “Advanced College in the Implementation of Gymnastic Regulations” as well as national “Excellent College for PE Courses”, and twice with the title “Excellent PE Course in Hubei Province”.

In the recent years, under the guidance of party leaders, the faculty of Physical Education Department is devoted with joint efforts to the research and reform of teaching. Since 2000, it has been popularizing a pattern of teaching classified optional PE courses, which has been generally welcomed by students. It has also achieved a lot with the teaching of some specialized courses such as rock-climbing, directional cross-country activities, surviving in the field, and so on. Great attention is also paid to the discipline construction, the improvement of staff quality, and the scientific research, resulting in a series of first-rate scientific achievements. In 2002, the research group mainly made up of teachers from the department undertook two sub-projects of the national key projects in the “Nineth Five-year Plan”. This indicates that the research of the physical education in the university has reached a new level. The department has thus accumulated experience, further strengthened the management and training of high-level sports team, and achieved great success. CUG won the“President Cup” successively at the fourth, fifth and sixth National College Students Sports Meeting. It also enjoys advantages in sports like mountaineering, rock-climbing, shuttlecock, kickboxing, and badminton, and has won medals of international competitions on behalf of China.

　　　The education should be oriented to the modernization, the world, and the future. Thus, in accordance with this principle, facing the whole country and even the world, the Physical Education Department of CUG has based itself upon the university, and dauntlessly jumped out of the limitation of the campus. It pays great attention to the broad gymnastic cooperation between universities and countries. Since the opening-up, the department has dedicated to the academic cooperation and sports competition successively with countries and regions such as Russia, Japan, Sweden, Czech Republic, the United States, Norway, France, Turkey, Bulgaria, Poland, Vietnam, Germany, Hong Kong SAR, and Taiwan, etc. All this has boosted relationship, broadened horizon, accumulated experience, and won glories for CUG and the whole country.
